The movie Fried Green Tomatoes centers on an unhappy housewife in her forties named Evelyn Couch who meets elderly Ninny Threadgoode in a nursing home while visiting her husband’s sick aunt. Ninny, over several encounters with Evelyn, tells her the story of the young tomboy Imogene "Idgie" Threadgoode, the youngest of the Threadgoode children. After Idgie's older sister’s wedding her older brother Buddy is hit by a train and killed. Devastated, Idgie recedes from her family and the world at large for most of her childhood and lives in the woods by herself. Ruth then leaves town to marry Frank Bennett and moves to Georgia. When Idgie goes to visit the now pregnant Ruth she discovers that Ruth’s husband is physically abusing her. After a brief altercation with Frank, Idgie is able to convince Ruth to move back home with her. Later, Ruth gives birth to her child, named Buddy Jr. Ruth and Idgie then open the Whistle Stop Café with money Idgie received from her family and employ a black cook named Sipsey and her son Big George to make the barbecue that quickly becomes popular with their patrons. Frank Bennett eventually returns to Whistle Stop in an attempt to kidnap Buddy Jr., but is killed by an unseen assailant. After Frank’s truck is discovered at the bottom of a lake, the police arrest Idgie along with Big George for Frank's murder. The local sheriff offers to release her and pin the crime solely on Big George, due to the fact the Big George is colored and Idgie is white, but Idgie refuses to sacrifice her friend. During the following trial, the local minister lies, providing Idgie and Big George with an alibi for the time of Frank's disappearance.
