Forman obviously worked closely with the costume designer and make-up artist during his direction of the film. The costume designer did a good job with the costumes. All the patients and staff of the ward are dressed in white scrubs in the institution to potentially show that they are all uniform, and that they are mentally innocent. A key thing to note is the costume changes when the patients are out and away from the mental ward. These costumes are often of dull colors to potentially show that these patients lacked normal mental capabilities. The make-up artist did a good job of portraying the patients to look ill. This portrayal was done by eliciting the patients to have splotchy skin as well as messy, oily hair. It is obvious that Forman worked closely with the costume designer and make-up artist to give the characters life.
