A bellowing screech pierced through the dark, night sky. Elle Thomas had forgotten to finish her algebra homework, and if she wanted to keep her 4.0, she had to get all the questions right. Almost instantly, Greg, her father knocked on her heavy wooden door in his signature style. Knock knock knockity knock, knock knock. “Everything alright in here Cupcake?” he inquired. “That was quite the scream.” “Yeah,” Elle responded. “I just forgot a few homework problems.” Elle glanced at her father. Light gray hairs peeked out of the bottom his full head of chestnut brown hair. She would have to die his hair again. “Okie-dokie,” he slurred. “Don’t stay up too late, you’ve got school tomorrow.”

It had a hole in the pocket, and as great as Greg, her father, was at accounting, he lacked many household skills, hence the landscapers past sunset. Elle imagined her house. The cream outside with curved shutters must have been her grandmother’s idea. Her father had inherited the house when he was in his early twenties. His mother had died of Lykemina and his father died shortly after with a broken heart. A tiny, electronic chime noise came filled the otherwise silent area. At 5:30 AM, the young, naive, Jenny Drpich is all dressed up finally ready to leave her home and head to her job for the first time. On her way, she grabbed a copy of West Australian newspaper, a leftover of cinnamon bun from last night and a freshly brewed cup of Long Black Arabica. The placidness of her home is unwieldy; the constant sound of the dead air seems remind her of pure elation of her little farmhouse in upper Swan Valley. These reminiscing values seem to ponder in her mind as she heads out of the driveway. It was a heinous drive from her house to the suburb.…

A little after one in the morning, Miss Maudie Atkinson’s house caught on fire. The fire spewed from the dining-room windows and it slowly devoured the house. The old fire truck that had been killed by the cold, was being pushed through the streets by a crowd of men. When the men attached the hose to a hydrant, the hose burst and water shot up, falling to the pavement. Then the men took the furniture from Miss Maudie’s house to the yard across the street.…

Before acquiring a certain raven haired detective, the downtown GCPD was a busy little place, the kind of place that low end criminals sat in tiny cells and await with one another without having to deal with the nuts at Arkham. The weekend meant that cops officially had their hands full, and even if downtown GCPD was obscure and unknown, the swell of low end criminals brought to GCPD was enough to keep it running. The cells were small and old, and other than a decent view of the water, that was pretty much all it had going for it. The downtown GCPD was always dealing with something from the petty drunks to the common thieves.…
