Faulkner's Narrative-Alyssa Vs.

Improved Essays
It was a humid summer night, the nights where you can wear a T-shirt outside and be perfectly comfortable. Jayde and Alyssa, my two friends were over. Jayde was wearing the shirt that she had worn the day I met her. By now it was way too small for her. Jayde was slightly small for her age, her hair cut like a boys, but that’s how she had it. Alyssa had a maroon shirt on. Alyssa was about as tall as I was and her brown hair was unlike anyone else’s and couldn’t be missed. We sat on my blue trampoline, twiddling our thumbs, we were bored and going to bed was simply out of the question. Jayde abruptly shined the bright yellow beam of his flashlight onto my face. Then, with excitement in her eyes suggested we play a little prank. Before my eyes …show more content…
We ran till my house was no longer visible, we then slowed down to a brisk walk. The chirping of crickets made it hard to talk without whispering, so we communicated primarily through body language. The loud clanking of our shoes sent an uncomfortable chill down my spine. In the distance head lights of a pickup truck were evident. Jayde shrieked “hide!” Alyssa and I then involuntarily jumped behind the nearest pine tree we saw. We were lined up so close to the tree I felt the rough bark scraping my legs. I bit my lip with a sour expression on my face. The car drove past us until the darkness swallowed it up and our journey …show more content…
We then jogged back to my house, laughing at the thought of Mr. Hicks seeing it the next morning. After about ten minutes we were back to my house. We crept inside careful to not wake my mother. Alyssa was in desperate need of a shower, dirt was all over her face and her legs were covered in sap from hiding behind the tree. Jayde, while not as grubby as Alyssa, has some scrapes on her legs from rubbing against branches. I appeared to be in a better state then both of them but the thought of a shower seemed pleasant. Before we could exchange thoughts on how much fun we had, we full asleep, like babies after being on a

The neighborhood was noiseless, and the sky was pitch black, for there had been no moon on that summer morning in June. My mother and father started our car and waited for Sofia,my sister, sean ,my friend, and me to get inside. It was time to leave our dull suburban home in San Jose, and drive to the beloved National Park, Yosemite, to hike Half Dome. On the car ride there I had slept, but awoke right when we had gotten into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Looking outside of the window and noticing all of the evergreen trees was surreal for me, as I rolled down my window a strong smell of pine and fresh air poured into the car.…

I was over ecstatic when Fernando, (also known as Fernie) my best guy friend asked me to go on a walking adventure with him in our hometown of Kelseyville, California. We started off the day by walking in the forest alongside of Kelsey Creek. This forest has a really big meaning to Fernie and I, because we both love nature in every aspect and these walking adventures are not uncommon to us. Starting on the path we both got lost in our own thoughts, I got distracted by looking above me at the the canopy the tree branches created. My eyes followed the patterns the sunlight was creating as it broke through the leaves and cascaded onto the uneven forest floor.…

Reflecting on the college application process, I noticed that the college essays were stressed very highly, but all the prompts ask for the same thing. Whether they are asking for an eventful moment, your passion, a hobby, or a chosen outsourced prompt, many students seem to convey the same messages in their essays. To get around this, one must ask a more inconspicuous prompt where the student’s character shows through their unique ideas. A prompt that is universal, conveys a meaning, and is always answered uniquely must ask for a narrative: Write a creative story. Walking through the woods one night, Agatha Johansson could not wait to arrive at her friend’s house.…

An example of this precision is the sentence from "A Rose for Emily" discussed in Alice Hall Petry's article: "Thus she passed from generation to generation - dear, inescapable, impervious, tranquil, and perverse"(280). In this sentence Faulkner summarizes Emily Grierson's character and her relationship with her community in five adjectives . While probably overlooked by the casual reader, Petry explores how closer examination reveals Faulkner's organization and manipulation of language. Placed near the end of the fourth section just before the announcement of Emily's death, the adjectives are both a chronological summation of the previous four chapters and foreshadowing of surprise uncovered in the fifth.…

But while we have discussed the most important diegetic components of epic—heroes and their victories—no discussion of that genre can be complete without a consideration of the way in which their story is told. To this end, we must consider Absalom, Absalom! an oral epic, despite its novelistic form. We may resolve this seeming contradiction by considering David Konstan and Kurt A. Raaflaub’s assertion that “[t]he notion of “oral” epic is [itself] problematic. What survives from antiquity is texts [sic], that come to us in written form” (my italics 1).…
