Da Dan Sickles: A Tragic Hero

Born October 20th 1819, Daniel Edgar Sickles studied law at New York University. He was elected to the bar in 1843 after passing the bar Sickles held multiple positions in the government. In 1847 he was elected the the N.Y state assembly, in 1853 he was secretary to James Buchanan then became minister to England. He was senator to New York in 1855; and was elected to the House of Reps. in 1857 and served till 1861. Sickles became known for having many scandalous things occur in his life. For example Sickles was suspected to bring a prostitute with him, as he was minister to England. When Sickles came back to the states he discovered that his wife had been having an affair with Philip Barton Key whom he murdered in 1859.Throughout Sickles life he developed a reputation for being an embezzler, a philander, and being a debt dodger(Heidler 1786). …show more content…
He was acquitted for his crime and was entered into the army in 1861. Sickles first commanding post in the military was as the Colonel of the New York, 17th infantry. He then became the commander of the Excelsior Brigade otherwise known as the Brigadier General of volunteers. Sickles bravery in battle led to his quick rising in the ranks of the Army, but he was often in altercations with his superior officers. Sickles was the man that attacked ‘StoneWall” Jackson’s rearguard at Chancellorsville. But, by doing this he left the union line undefended which resulted in very heavy
