I'm anticipating learning about the topics in this course as a biomedical science undergraduate.
Studying Chemistry has given me the opportunity to explore my interest in science and I enjoyed carrying out experiments in the lab which has improved my laboratory techniques. It has also enabled me to delve into topics that have fascinated me such as the optical isomer s-thalidomide and it's tragic teratogenic effect on the human body. A-levels maths has helped refine my problem solving and data handling skills. Psychology has broadened my research and debating skills as well as my ability to apply studies to theories which is crucial to the field of biomedical science. Learning about cell biology in BTEC Applied Science was stimulating and encouraged my desire to undertake this course.

This was difficult and required us to work effectively under pressure as a team in order for us to get to our camp. Working proficiently as part of a team is a skill that is important in a Biomedical team therefore I am able to co-operate well with others and also work independently. In spring, I participated in the National Citizen Service where I met many different people and boosted my confidence. This experience allowed me to venture out of my comfort zone and to take on challenges such as helping lead a social action project to make a difference in my

The Human Biology, Health, and Society major allows me to do so. As I complete the introductory courses in chemistry, biology, math, writing, and the social science, I would have a chance to contemplate different career paths while still forming a strong background. Nevertheless, this major’s emphasis on biology and chemistry allows me to prepare me for medical school. Moreover, this major is holistically unique, for it gets students ready for the constantly changing real world by offering them a broad, multidisciplinary perspective on human health issues.…

Cutting precisely on the lines, making sure I didn’t stray and accidently cut out part of an article, I carefully extracted the Sudoku puzzle from the daily newspaper before my father came to the breakfast table to read it. Then, working as fast as I could, I began deciphering the puzzle, eliminating numbers I knew didn’t belong in a certain box and writing, in tiny print, all the numbers that could potentially fit. Gradually, as the pieces came together, the completed puzzle unfolded. I glanced at the clock, scarfed down my cereal (which had gone soggy), and raced out the door just in time to catch the bus. During my hour long bus ride to school I would reflect on how I had solved the puzzle, wondering if there was a better way to approach…

Personal Statement I am writing this Personal Statement in support of my application to study for a Master’s degree in Biochemistry at the California State University Sacramento. My interest in Biochemistry has always been a real world interest, and my desire to study Biochemistry at the Master’s level is likewise fueled by the imperativeness of the subject and the crucial role it plays in our everyday lives. The part I want to play as a Biochemist – in bringing to the world's attention the implications of current health practices, various diseases, and living processes – is in my point of view, the essence of biochemical studies. Society has continued solving challenges, seemingly insurmountable and perhaps more pressing than we have ever faced – I strive to be at the forefront of the “solution-finding” as a research scientist.…

Any course with the designation “AP” sounded challenging, but an intensified class like AP Biology sounded more challenging, due to its extensive lab reports and difficult scientific concepts. Taking AP Biology felt like being a doctor, wearing a lab coat or writing a report for every lab we experimented with. AP Biology not only covered the human body at a molecular level, but also provided me the experience of what working in a lab truly felt like. The experience and the class fascinated me and helped me gain some practical experience with tools such as centrifuges or micropipettes. Like AP Biology, Anatomy/Physiology also provided me with lab experience in dissecting various organisms.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…

In the three years that have passed since I earned my undergraduate degree, much has changed in my life. For a year and half, I moved to West Virginia to work with an intracellular human pathogen, Chlamydia trachomatis, that has caused a serious public-health problem. In afterward, I transitioned to Maryland where I am currently working as an Intramural Research Training Award postbaccalaureate (IRTA) research fellow at the National Institute of Health (NIH) investigating against the common deadly pathogen, MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Much like everyone else, time to time I think back and reflect to myself about my continual growth and progress. Really, my scientific career began as an intern just asking how to use a…
