In the book Warriors don't cry by Melba Patillio Beals, The author has many motivators and motivations. The support, protection, strength, and encouragement from her family are examples of how it motivates people to struggle to change. Support can make you struggle for change if someone helps you or if they are there for you while you are struggling. In the book Melba's family supported her decision when she chose to go to Central High and start integration in the school system.…
Freshmen retention rates as well as college graduation rates show that may not be the case. A goal of peer mentoring is to motivate students to complete tasks in a timely manner and on their own (Satyanarayana, Li, & Braneky, 2014).College freshmen can be easily overwhelmed when they no longer live with their parents and do not have someone else dictating their schedules. Peer mentors do not necessarily dictate a mentee’s schedule, but rather give them advice on how to handle that feeling of anxiety and how to develop a sense of responsibility for completing their tasks. Studies indicate that support systems need to be put in place during a student’s first semester; that first semester can lay the groundwork for completion (Budny & Paul, 2014).…
School is an important thing in life, and sometimes it’s a difficult thing for many students. They do not feel like they can afford to go, have the finances to go, or even whether they feel ready to go. Everyone deserves a chance to be able to go to college and feel they are ready for the next step in their education. Sometimes all that is needed is a little push from people in the student’s life. Having someone supporting them and helping them prepare for college is one of the best things someone can do for a student.…
I began to depend on family, friends, and teachers to get me through this rough spot in time. My parents constantly reminded me that schooling is most important, and getting my work done always came first. (MENTORS) I would often work on my math homework with my friend, Jayci Hawker, who was always willing to help me with any of the questions I had. (HELPER) I also visited Mrs. Fehlman’s room more than a few times to check my grades and complete my assignments.…
When most people think about where their support comes from they would say their family. Support comes from anyone that wants you to do better. People that can support you can be your siblings, parents, teachers, friends, and mentors. Having support affects students mentally and physically. One type of support is mental support.…
I am careful with my actions, ensuring that I do not attract the kind of students that led to my cousin's downfall. These experiences have taught me many lessons and they motivate me to push forward in school. I always do my best to make myself and my family proud. Throughout my entire life, my parents have provided everything for me. I want to return the favor by attending…
Along my journey in school I remember all the sacrifices my parents did for me and my siblings. For example, my father Adolfo Garcia would work from Monday to Saturday from sun up to sun down in order to provide food on the table, clothing on our backs, and a roof over are heads. Although both of my parents encourage and motivate me to attend school and pursue higher education, I am also motivated by all the sacrifices they have made because I know that if it wasn’t for the support of my parents I would not be where I am…
As a middle class, Asian American student, it has been a struggle for my mom to financially provide me with the utmost education. Throughout high school, I’ve worked diligently to ensure some financial stability to accomplish my future dreams and goals. However, it was not enough. There were many decisions and sacrifices I had to make to attend a university. The constant financial hardship has shaped me into a more altruistic and mature person.…
We learned to value education and family because they are the essential things that are going to help us progress in this world. Fortunately, these grim times are behind us because my parents received their legal residencies a few years ago. This ended a very dark time that we had to overcome because of the consistent fear…
Being a 1st generation student, I have faced numerous challenges throughout high school and during college. My mother has worked all her 7 days a week to provide finances for our family. Nobody in my family has attended college and I have done many things on my own. During senior year I knew I wanted to attend college, but knew very little about how and when. I took all my standardized test during senior year, because I had no clue taking them junior year and then retaking them senior year could ultimately advance your scores.…
Health and the environment, what an interesting class. Honestly, I wish many adults would take your class. The presentation of the ecological model of health was done well and I believe this is something that so many people in the United States would benefit from learning about. It is amazing how some people think just because we were all born in the United States that we all have access to the same opportunities when there is clear statistical data that proves otherwise. At the age of 35, I am well versed in my family health history.…
I am a first-generation college student and I come from a low-income family. Obtaining a higher education has always been a challenge for me. I grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere in Northeast California. My family owns a donut shop and business has been slow so my parents are struggling a bit as they are sending me to college. Nonetheless, I was able to help my parents pay for some things, such as rent and other expenses because over the summer of 2014, I was offered an engineering internship.…
When I finally broke down and spoke honestly with a few of my teachers I was met with an out pouring of support. My new epiphany was buoyed by constant love and support from my grandparents who consistently insisted that I was both capable and intelligent. As well as constant encouragement from my cousins Nick and Lacey. With time I developed better time management and organizational skills, I still have trouble with motivation but I'm steadily improving. With my sophomore year I realized I had a passion for photography which led me to better self expression, a better understanding of my grief for my father and better understood the inner workings of my own mind.…
Throughout high school I lived a very privileged life, one that I now realize I took for granted entirely. My parents transported me to every soccer practice, track meet, cross country meet, and science fair with no complaints ever. They provided me with a sufficient amount of funds to spend every week for whatever I decided I needed at that moment, and also contributed every possible thing I needed in order to be successful in high school. To be quite honest, they did everything that made me the student I am today. I distinctly remember walking into the counselors office each year with my mother so that she could help me make my schedules.…
What is your support system? What long-term benefits do you feel this support system has on your life? If you feel you are missing particular networks, feel free to discuss that, as well. My emotionally supportive network is my family and companions and they are dependably around when I require them or in the event that I call them…
