What I Learned To Be Successful In High School

Improved Essays

My parents transported me to every soccer practice, track meet, cross country meet, and science fair with no complaints ever. They provided me with a sufficient amount of funds to spend every week for whatever I decided I needed at that moment, and also contributed every possible thing I needed in order to be successful in high school. Saving money is a prestigious skill, one I definitely have not acquired, and I believe that to be the biggest roadblock that stands in the way of me being successful in college and earning my degree because without money it is nearly impossible to attend college and in my case, medical school as well. Money is one of the main contributing reasons of why young adults do not enroll directly into a university, and if I would have known I would be paying for my own education during August when my mother’s bomb of an announcement was thrown at me, I more than likely would have enrolled into a community college first. Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

I would like to attribute getting into UCLA and maintaining a high GPA to my own hard work, as would most students. However, we often underestimate how much our parents’ status affects our own success. My father is an engineer and my mother is an attorney, so they are able to pay for my full tuition and housing. My grandfather never had this luxury and would have to take odd jobs to support him and his mother, according to my aunt, Christie Shary. Although parents’ income may seem unrelated to academic performance, this is not the case.…
