What is a theory? - A theory is a foundational belief of how the world works. As theories allow individuals to gain knowledge and have understandings, therefore the term ‘theory’ is powerful. Within this essay, there would be a discussion on a scenario of a child living in Aotearoa New Zealand using Urie Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model as a guideline. By using Bronfenbrenner’s theory, this will help form an image of the child’s life and how it has an impact on the individual's learning and development.

Urie Bronfenbrenner was a Russian-American developmental psychologist. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological model is a theory of educational psychology that studies human development over time and was first established in 1975. He believed that a person’s development was affected by everything in their surrounding environment, therefore, he divided the environment up into five different levels. Listed from closest to the person to furthest: the microsystem, the mesosystem, the exosystem, the macrosystem, and the chronosystem. There are also two other valuable thesis that is contributed to the learning and development of a child.

According to Piaget, normal cognitive growth passes through four periods and each period has its own description: Infancy - Sensorimotor, Early childhood - Pre-operational, Middle childhood - Concrete operations, and Adolescence - Formal operations. The other thesis is led by Lev Vygotsky. ‘Sociocultural Theory of Development’ is the name of his theory. Vygotsky looks at the development as a result of interaction between cultural and historical factors. He also believed that the key rule of development is matching a child’s demand with the requirement of their culture (Gardiner & Kosmitzki, 2008, p.
