This shows that what Gatsby is reaching for has caused him to only think about it. It is shown later that what he was reaching for was the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock which represents Daisy herself. This is an impossible dream and it shows that his obsession with Daisy has clouded his common knowledge. Daisy also helps with the creation of their toxic relationship. Daisy is a married woman. She is however not married to Gatsby but to Tom. Daisy seeing Gatsby behind Tom’s back violates a major rule in any relationship. If she cheats on Tom when they are married with a …show more content…

Gatsby seems to understand this idea whilst chasing Daisy. Barbara Will says of it, “For Nick, Gatsby’s lies, his pretensions, and his corruption are ‘no matter’; nor is his failure to win back Daisy; what matters is the sustaining belief in the value of striving for a ‘wondrous object,’ not its inevitable disappearance and meaninglessness (Will).” Nick admires Gatsby’s ability to live life with only his “wondrous object” keeping him going.
