Tom has an extremely small attention span. He is used to getting everything he wants in life and more. So, when he doesn’t get something he wants immediately, he looks elsewhere for it. For example, he felt like he wasn’t having as much fun as he wanted in his marriage with Daisy. This drove him to infidelity and “he got some woman in New York”(19). However, Gatsby did everything in his power in order to get what he wanted. He joined a gang to become wealthy for Daisy, he bought a house right across the bay just to be near Daisy, and he never did anything except think about Daisy. He was one hundred percent dedicated to her in all aspects of life. He never gave up on her until the day he died. He wanted to “fix everything just the way it was before” even if it was the last thing he ever did(117). Tom and Jay’s characters are almost completely opposite when it comes to what they stand for. Tom wants everything in life, but doesn’t want to work for it. Gatsby, once he decides what he wants, gives all his effort until he achieves his goals. Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan have similar interests in love and in wealth. However, Tom is focused on short-term results, whereas Gatsby is willing to work to obtain his long-term goals. Gatsby has great qualities of determination and loyalty, but this will also be his downfall in the end. Tom’s need to get everything he wants will also be the reason why he will never truly be happy. Because of this, both men are similar in that will never have a happy
