Brandt’s attitude contrasted sharply with that of Adenauer, who took more than a week to after the building of the Wall to go to Berlin. Nevertheless, the CDU and FDP profited from the increased tension and resultant fear of the left in General and communism in particular, and also from their association with the benefits of the economic miracle and the stability that this had brought. The electorate’s frustration with Adenauer resulted in a shift from the CDU and smaller parties to both the Social Democrats and the FDP which had campaigned for a coalition with the CDU led by Erhard rather than Adenauer. Despite its pledge not to enter a coalition led by Adenauer, the FDP did just that after long negotiations, though on condition that Adenauer agrees to hand over a successor before the next election in 1965.
