It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. That is about the number that I want to write, so if I could copy one in here that would be phenomenal. However, I can 't, and therefore must write about what it means to be an American. It is the tendency of people to identify themselves with a group. Whether that be a team, a state, town, gang, school, country, it doesn 't really matter. People love to be a part of something bigger than themselves, and countries are no different and definitively fall into this category. Countries are normally relatively simple to group. For thousands of years, wherever you lived or your religion generally determined what nationality you were. Even today that is a part of determining whether or not someone is from a country. What if you had an entire country filled with people who came from somewhere else, though? This country exists, and it is called America. While location has its place in determining who is an American after over two hundred and twenty-five years of sovereignty, it is far from the entire picture. A sense of patriotism and possession of the American dream combine with where a person lives to truly determine if that person is an American. I assert that a person should have spent some time living in the United States if they are to be called an American. I could possibly stretch my definition in order to include certain ideologies and demographics in other countries, but I feel that such a definition would…
Jingoism- Extreme patriotism, especially in the form of aggressive or warlike foreign policy. Although rarely used in our lives, this is the best word to describe Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Mussolini was willing to do anything for Italy’s growth as a country. For his extreme efforts to build Italy he is falsely remembered as one of the most diabolical dictators, in history responsible for thousands of deaths. He was interested in obtaining power so he could make Italy into a dominant…

Jingoism is defined as “extreme patriotism, especially in the form of aggressive or warlike foreign policy” (Merriam-Webster, 2003). Flanagan portrays this Japanese patriotism…
Country, an influential book towards imperialism. He wrote, “this powerful race will move down upon Mexico, down upon Central and South America, out upon the islands of the sea, over upon Africa and beyond. And can any one doubt that the result of this competition of races will be the “survival of the fittest?”” Many Anglo-Saxon people believed that God had chosen them to be the dominant human beings on earth. They saw imperialism as a mission to Christianize the rest of the world. Albert…
During World War 1, there were influences of jingoism and patriotism in the United States. They were intended to stir up people into believe that if they, as American citizens, loved their country, they would support the war and have people enlist. either banning the medium itself, such as in Brave New World or Ray Bradbury 's Farenheit 451 where books have become a social taboo or explicitly banned respectively; or by regulating the books which can be written so strictly that nothing published possesses any real meaning. The conflation of freedom of expression and free will itself are often explicit in such novels- for example in Brave New World, John 's individuality and humanity in contrast to the people who form modern society are…
The Effects of Nationalism in Modern America The United States of America was founded on patriotism and rebellion. The colonies banded together against the enemy, which at the time was the British. Common Sense was published in 1776, and fueled the flag waving flames. These concept of national pride and us-against-them continued into the temperament of the new world. Nationalism bloomed during the later influx of immigrants and tensions between foreigners and 'Americanism' began to rise.…
of the Philippines, the Anti-Imperialist League was created in 1898. Imperialist were on board with the idea of Philippine annexation, it was seen as necessary to the survival of the United States. Factories in America were overproducing, the economy was in shambles, and desperation grew for newer markets to sell products.
