If that act of courage and selflessness isn’t enough, Stoneburner declined to speak on camera for NBC because he felt he didn’t need the attention. If only we all strived to be as charitable. Another example of a theme of sacrifice for the good of others in Little Women is at the point of the book when Mrs. March asks her children to give up their Christmas breakfast to their poor neighbors, the Hummels. As stated in the text, "Not far away from here lies a poor woman with a little newborn baby. Six children are huddled into one bed to keep from freezing, for they have no fire. There is nothing to eat over there, and the oldest boy came to tell me they were suffering hunger and cold. My girls, will you give them your breakfast as a Christmas present?" (Alcott,16 ) At the beginning of the book, the March’s seem very poor until they are contrasted with the Hummels. Though poverty has seemingly greatly affected the March’s, Mrs. March still has the spirit and heart to show generosity to their neighbors. Her altruism not only positively impacted the Hummels, but also set a good example for her children which gave them a value to strive for. Throughout the entirety of the book the March girls always strive to be selfless, but it proves to be a task that isn’t easily accomplished.
