Deep in the heart of an ancient forest, in a magical place known as jolly old England, there lived a family of jackrabbits who were the fastest creatures in all the land. In fact, these jackrabbits could run faster than anyone in the entire animal kingdom — including the cheetahs, even — and they were quite famous because of it. Their name, most appropriately, was Quickstar. The members of the Quickstar family included a Mum and a Dad and their five children, and they were all rather extraordinary as forest animals go. As mentioned, they could all run exceptionally fast even for jackrabbits, even for cheetahs — even for anything one can imagine, really. Let’s just say that in a race between a Quickstar on the ground and an airplane in the sky, the Quickstar would probably win. (Well, perhaps not probably, but possibly.) But running was not all the Quickstars could do. The Mum, Mrs. Quickstar, was a wonderful gourmet chef who specialized in wildflower recipes. The Dad, Mr. Quickstar, was a skilled hunter and a respected leader in the small community where the Quickstars lived. Both were decidedly fine-looking jackrabbits with tannish gray fur and kind, hazel-brown eyes. Their children were also quite striking, and exhibited unusual talents that some might think strange, but nonetheless impressive. For example, the second child, Royston, was an abstract artist who made large sculptures out of acorns. (“Abstract” is a fancy way of saying that the sculptures did not look like…

3,2,1… The clamps release and we are shot forward like a bullet in a barrel. The wind rips through my hair, my head is flung back against the seat, by body locks, adrenaline rushing through me. Then we pause, just for a moment at the top, suspended 420 feet above the ground. All I see is the lake and…

brisk, and judging from the muddy yet clean smell, it seems like it rained last night. Of course, it almost always rains at night. This is Oregon after all. Walking down the porch steps, my feet are met with dewy blades of grass. This is why I don’t wear shoes, I reason in my head. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to feel the supple grass between my toes. Or the solid feel of the cemented sidewalk. Turning the corner, I am met with the driveway. It’s not like the sidewalk, flat and even. Instead,…

I knew I had work to do, that I had to focus, but I could not force my mind into submission. An idea popped into my head and before I can fully process it, I find myself walking to the bathroom. I stand, exit my room, and open the bathroom door, where the mirror was foggy and the air heavy from a recent shower, and open the mirrored cabinet. As I go to open the mirrored…
