The 2005 Cronulla riots were a sequence of race riots and outbreaks of mob violence in Sydney, beginning on 11 December 2005 in the beachside suburb of Cronulla which spread, over the next few nights, to even more suburbs. The riots were focused on tensions between youths from Sydney's Lebanese and white populations. A crowd gathered at Cronulla on the morning of Sunday, 11 December 2005, and by midday, roughly 5,000 people had gathered near the beach. The gathering began peacefully, but later in the afternoon a man who appeared to be Middle Eastern was attacked by members of the crowd. The police eventually got involved. Many similar attacks took place later in the day, followed by retaliatory attacks that night and on subsequent nights, resulting…

sit-ins, protests, rallies, marches, and in some instances, riots. Whenever a race riot does occur, people frantically ask about whether it is justified or if it is the right thing to be doing. However, when looking at the fact that race riots are never random incidents, are these really the questions we should be asking? I believe that in the event of a race riot people focus on the event itself and ignore the real problems that led to the riot in the first place,…

If you were to google pictures of “war zone” and then google again “riots” you would see a lot of similarities between the images: fire, destruction, debris, thick plumes of smoke. These images will give you a good idea as to what transpired and the eventual aftermath, in the evening of the Vancouver Hockey Riot. Some would argue a series of unfortunate events, such as inadequate planning, closing liquor stores early that day, and allowing overcrowding of downtown Vancouver. However what really…
For possibly decades now, there has been fighting in the middle east and I am not sure it will ever stop. One particular story of fighting stuck out to me, however. A man named Emad Burnat filmed activist protest of Israel taking land from his small Palestinian village. The documentary he created is called Five Broken Cameras. He is a peasant farmer who lives off of the land he owned. He has a family consisting of his wife and his four sons. He films to show their side of the fighting and riots…
hand, people are rioting, burning trucks and cars, now police officers can’t even do their job without being criticized. People need to be informed about the day to day struggles of a police officer, now people don't even want the to do their jobs. The “police brutality” is insane, if people would listen to what they say without resisting, everything would be much easier for the arresting officer and the person being arrested. These people burning transfer trucks, looting stores, and destroying…
emerging from today’s youth. The London riots, which occurred only five years ago, were the actions that brought Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange, where youth gangs ravage the city, to life. In his article, Burgess accurately predicts a time in England when teenagers will be in control. Attempting to justify these unexplainable events, Jonathon Foreman wrote “London Aflame,” where rioters in London defy authority and act in anarchy. By showing us the events of the riots, as well as, why they…
Do lives need to be lost before people fought for civil rights? 1,134 African Americans have died at the hands of law enforcement officers in 2015 ( Swaine, Laughland, Lartey, and McCarthy). A Movement #BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin 's murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted of his crime. Trayvon Martin wasn’t the only African American who was murdered and had his death erupt with riot and protest. Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland are others whose deaths…
