Name species of Cnidaria
Jellyfish, coral, sea anemones, hydras.
Polyp?
Sessile.
Madusa?
Free living, can swim! Yay!
Sexual or asexual?
May alternate btwn the two.
Tissue layers?
2-diploblastic.
What lines the inside of the animal?
GVC-gastrovascular cavity.
Nervous System?
Sensory organs, made up of neurons, NERVE net!! The nerve net is made up of many individual nerve cells connected to
each other by their axons and dendrites. It is embedded in the mesoglea and extends throughout the Hydra body.
Muscle types?
Circular, and longitudinal.
Use of hydrostatic skeleton?
For effective muscle action. and movement.
Nematocysts?
Stinging elements used to gather food and for defense.
Symmetry?
Radial.
What are the two types of tissue layers present in the Cnidaria?
Gastrodermis, and the epidermis.
GVC has how many openings?
1 single opening.
Hydra feeds?
Hydra uses nematocysts to spear
prey and then the tentacles stuff
the food in its mouth.
Hydra digests?
Once the prey item is stuffed into the GVC, it has to be digested. Digestive
enzymes secreted into
the cavity break the prey
into small bits for ( GVC)
further digestion. (extracellular digestion)
Intracellular digestion?
“Intra” means
inside –
intracellular
digestion takes
place inside the
cells that line the
cavity.
The bits of food
formed by extracellular
digestion are taken up
by PHAGOCYTOSIS
(GVC)
into the cells that line
the GVC.Gastrodermal
cells line the
GVC.
Intracellular
digestion takes
place inside cells
in food vacuoles
(formed by
phagocytosis).
Undigested
waste is
expelled out
through the
(GVC) mouth.
3 types of tissue that make up the hydras body?
Gastrodermis, Epidermis, Mesoglea.
Two types of cells that are involved in the hydras digestion are?
Enzyme secreting cells, digesting cells.
3 types of cells that make up the gastrodermis?
Enzyme secreting cells, digesting cells, and gastromuscular cells.
2 types of cells that make up the epidermis?
cnidoblasts that contain nematocysts, and Epidermal cells.
