What is adulthood and when does it start?
Researchers and writers now argue that 18-25 represent early adulthood
Apter (2001) uses the term “thresh holder” for young adults who are no longer adolescents but are not yet launched into independence.
Other authors consider early adulthood to be the decade between ages 20-30.
It is a time when most of us finish school, find a career we enjoy, and create a family of our own.
Health: Nutrition, and Exercise
For health benefits, physical activity should be moderate or vigorous and add up to at least 30 minutes a day
Moderate physical activities include:
Walking briskly (about 3 ½ miles per hour), Hiking, Gardening/yard work, Dancing, Golf (walking and carrying clubs), Bicycling (less than 10 miles per hour), Weight training (general light workout)
Vigorous physical activities include:
Running/jogging (5 miles per hour), Bicycling (more than 10 miles per hour), Swimming (freestyle laps), Aerobics, Walking very fast (4 ½ miles per hour), Heavy yard work, such as chopping wood, Weight lifting (vigorous effort), Basketball (competitive)
The USDA Dietary Guidelines (mypyramid.gov) describe a healthy diet as one that:
Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products
Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts
Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugar
How does intelligence change across the adult lifespan?
Some aspects of intelligence decline with age, but generally not until late in life
Some aspects of intelligence are maintained or increase with age
Individuals can stave off the effects of intellectual aging through activity and good health
There are multiple ways that intelligence can be expressed:
Creativity, practicality, emotions, etc.
Fluid Intelligence
refers to the ability to be a flexible, adaptive thinker allowing you to make inferences and understand the relationships between concepts
Crystallized Intelligence
knowledge acquired through life experiences, education, and socialization in a particular culture
Expertise
development of advanced skills and knowledge in a particularly well-practiced activity, requiring intense practice and immune to aging effects.
Creativity
mental process involving the generation of new ideas or concepts, or new associations between existing ideas or concepts
Wisdom
expert knowledge system applied to issues of life that permits exceptional insight, judgment and advice involving conduct and meaning of life. There is no relationship between wisdom and age
According to Erik Erikson's eight stages of development
this is a time of intimacy vs. isolation
Young adulthood: 18 to 35
Ego Development Outcome: Intimacy and Solidarity vs. Isolation
Basic Strengths: Affiliation and Love
Young adult seeks one or more companions and love.
Finds mutually satisfying relationships, primarily through marriage and friends
Begins to start a family (today start families in late thirties)
If negotiating this stage is successful, we can experience intimacy on a deep level.
If not successful, isolation and distance from others may occur
If unable to create satisfying relationships, our world can begin to shrink as, in defense, we can feel superior to others
Our significant relationships are with marital partners and friends
Theorist, Ellen Berscheid
described four different kinds of adult love: Altruism, friendship, romantic love, affectionate love
Altruism
love in the family setting
Friendship
love which has the qualities of enjoyment, attachment, and devotion
Romantic Love
defined in layman's terms as "falling in love"
Affectionate Love
includes companionship and loyalty
Theorist, Robert Sternberg
advanced the Triangular Theory of Love from this theoretical approach
Love is comprised in 3 main entities: Passion, intimacy, and commitment
Passion
physical and sexual attraction toward another person
Intimacy
emotional warmth and closeness
Commitment
Intent to build a long term relationship, and to stay in the relationship even when problems arise
Sternberg further elaborates on the passion, intimacy and commitment of love by further breaking these love characteristics down further into 7 forms of love
Liking, infatuation, empty love, romantic love, fatous love, compassionate or affectionate love, consummate love
Liking
Intimacy alone, no passion or commitment
Infatuation
Passion, but no commitment or intimacy
Empty Love
Only commitment, no passion or intimacy
Romantic Love
Intimacy and passion, but no commitment
Fatous Love
Passion and commitment, but no intimacy
Companionship and Affectionate Love
Intimacy and commitment, but no passion
Consummate Love
Fullest type of love, commitment, passion, and intimacy are all present
Adults may have a drinking problem if they regularly:
1. Drink to calm their nerves or reduce depression 2. Lose interest in food 3. Consume their drinks at a fast rate 4. Try to hide their drinking habits 5. Drink alone 6. Hurt someone or themselves while under the influence 7. Got drunk 3 or 4 times in the past year 8. Need more alcohol to get "high" 9. Feel irritable when they aren't drinking 10. If they experience medical, social, or financial problems that were caused by drinking
Drugs of Abuse
Acid/LSD, Alcohol, club drugs, cocaine, ecstasy/MDMA, heroin, inhalants, marijuana, methamphetamine, PCP?phencyclidine, prescription, medications, smoking/nicotine, steroids (anabolic)
Divergences in physical and mental aging in adulthood
Choices we make throughout adulthood affect the rate at which we “age”
Try adjusting lifestyle habits and choices to see what impact this has on your functional vs. chronological age and on life expectancy
