X Task C 1 Sumary

Used to:

Further Perfect turning technique

Perfect subconscious control whiled dividing attention between flight path & ground reference

Teach that radius of turn is a distance which is affected by the degree of bank used when turning with relation to a definite object

Develop keen perception of altitude

Perfect ability to correct for wind drift while in turns

X Task C 2

PTS calls for two turns around a point of uniform radii or distance from a prominent ground reference using maximum bank of approx 45 degrees while maintaining a constant altitude

X Task C 3

Maneuvers require a constantly changing angle of bank and angles of wind correction.

X Task C 4

The closer the airplane is to direct downwind where groundspeed is greatest, the steeper the bank & the faster the rate of turn

X Task C 5

The more the direction of upwind ground speed is the least and bank is shallower an the rate of turn is slower.

X Task C 6

Pick a prominent point (Crossroads may help to identify the quadrants of the turn and help to identify the distance from the point)

X Task C 7

Start entry on DOWN WIND heading

X Task C 8

Make sure point chosen wont be blocked from view by the wing while turning

If the radius is too big the wing may block the pilot's view

X Task C 9

If the wind is very strong, the pilot will need to roll quickly into the turn so that the steepest bank is attained abeam of teh point when headed directly downwind

X Task C 10

During the downwind half of the circle the airplane's nose is progressively turned toward the inside of the circle

During the upwind half, the nose is progressively turned toward the outside

X Task C 11

Common mistake centers around the use of an incorrect initial bank

X Task C 12 Common Errors

Failure to clear the area

Failure to establish appropriate bank on entry

Excessive bank & Inadequate wind correction angle on the down wind side of the circle resulting in the drifting towards the point

Inadequate bank angle & or excessive wind correction angle or the upwind side of the circle resulting in drift away from the reference point

Skidding turns when turning from down wind to crosswind

Slipping turns when turning from upwind to crosswind

Gaining or losing altitude

X Task C 13 Make sure

Pick suitable altitude (between 600' & 1000' AGL) 1000' AGL is suggested

Pick a good point (make sure you pick a place with a good emergency landing spot)

Configure Airspeed prior to entry (C-172 90 MPH)

Dont forget wind correction angle

Project track ahead so to make corrections along the maneuver

X Task C 14 PTS Common Errors

Poor planning, orientation or division of attention

Uncoordinated use of flight controls

Improper correction for the wind drift

Failure to maintain selected altitude or airspeed

Selection of a ground reference point where there is no suitable emergency landing area within gliding distance
