Alliances and Ententes

An alliance is a binding agreement under which partners would go to war in certain circumstances. An entente however is a less binding agreement between 2 or more nation for cooperative action

A = go to war E = cooperative action

Ententes and Alliances in Europe

Dual alliance between Germany and Austria - Hungary signed in 1879.


Triple alliance between Germany, A - H, and Italy signed in 1882.


Anglo - French Entente signed in 1904.


Anglo - Russian Entente signed in 1907.


Triple Entente between Britain, France and Russia.

What two armed camps was Europe divided into?

Triple Alliance (the Great Powers) and Triple Entente (the Allies).

Militarism

Europe's hostile division led to an arms race (stockpiling of weaponry due to tension). Germany was the leader of the arms race and the expansion of of army and navy.

What are 2 other methods used by the countries to assist them in the arms race?

Conscription (drafting of people into the army) and detailed military plans for war.

Define military plans.

Precise plans for mobilization and attack that often could not be reversed.

Other tension what other factors contributed to the arms race?

1.Technological and organizational developments (enlightenment) which led to the creation of new weaponry. Because countries had the means to gain this weaponry they continued to gather them despite not having any use.


2. Competition between European countries. Each country was trying to out do the other.

Give an example of a military plan in WW1.

Schlieffen Plan. A formula for fighting a two front war against France in the West and Russia in the East.

Keeping a balance in power.

Countries extending authority through gaining and controlling territories.


Eg: Austria - Hungary trying to obtain land 8 the Balkans inorder to have a third crown.

Nationalism

Nationalism is the asserting of one's nationality. there was a sharp rise in nationalism in the Balkans and especially the Pan - Serb sentiment
