What is the 1971 German Wine Laws?

Grosses Gewachs
|
represents the apex of a qualitative pyramid for classifying German wines that has been operative since 2002 within the membership of the VDP wine-growers' association. Wines so designated (but not necessarily so labelled, as the terminology was not recognized by the German Wine Law as recently as 2005) are from traditional grapes and vineyard sites classified (by the VDP) as having demonstrated their historical superiority. The sites in question may be entire Einzellagen or portions of Einzellagen. The category Grosses Gewächs also stipulates that the fruit be cropped at no more than 50 hl/ha, hand harvested, at no less than the must weight required for Spätlese, and the wine be subject to sensory review. Besides attempting to classify, protect, and promote the best vineyard crus of Germany, the VDP regulations for Grosses Gewächs were also intended to stipulate a recognizable style of wine. Grosses Gewächs would have either residual sugar comparable with trocken or the lower permissible end of halbtrocken, or else be nobly sweet wines of Auslese or above. Few growers in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer were enthusiastic about these stipulations, which effectively eliminated the category of tasteably sweet Spätlese from the top echelon of German wine. In 2005, the VDP regulations had still not been finalized nor embraced by law. Grosses Gewächs wines were therefore typically bottled in glass embossed with a logo featuring a grape cluster and the numeral 1 with a 'front' label designating only the site and vintage. The wines also carried an official label designating Prädikat and generally noting that the wine is trocken.
