- A county such as Napa or Monterey
- An AVA such as Central Coast or Napa Valley

*AVA - American Viticulturral Area, can include more than one state. Its requirement is the following
- Vintage Date (95% grape comes from stated vintage)
- Source of Fruit (85% comes from AVA)
- Varietal Labeling(75% fruit must be from stated variety
- Estate Bottling (must be AVA winery, 100% of grapes under control of winery)

The requirements do not mean that the quality is better than other appellation wines
