Symbolism
takes on a meaning in the work far beyond its ordinary meaning. It is anything that stands for an object, idea, or an emotion other than itself.

allegory, fable and parable
Imagery
gives the reader a clear mental picture of what is happening, ofthe in a form of a vivid description or striking comparison. Can have a symbolic meaning.
Types of imagery
metaphor, simile, straightforward description.
Foreshadowing
to shadow or typify beforehand, urging the reader on to future events in the story.
Flashback
an interruption in the progression of a story by telling an earlier event.
Malapropism
a funny misuse of one word for a similar one.
ex. I just ate a gigantic hamburglar for lunch.
Satire
a literary work in which vices, follies, etc., are held up to ridicule and scorn.
Allusion
a reference to a well known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art.
Repetition
repeating key words or phrases to build suspense, excitement, fear, or for emphasis.
Dialogue
written conversations between the characters in the story.
