Role of Diplomacy and Alliance System
- triple alliance in 1882
- franco-russian 1891-3
- anglos-german relations from 1898 to 1914
- 1st moroccan crisis 1905 - diplomatic crisis, plan to decrease french influence and increase german hegemony
- problems between serbia and austria evolved into general war due to alliances
- alliances reduced felxibility of states recations to crises
Counter arguments of Diplomacy and Alliance System
- AJP Taylor, alliances were not major cause of outbreak of ww1
- Triple Entente in 1907 wasnt a formal military alliance and britian had no ties to it
- alliances actually contributed to peace (e.g. Franco-Russian aliance improved relations)
Economic Factors
-Lenin believed that war was result of imperial rivalry by states competing economically for markets to invest in
- capitalist competition for oversea empires eventually lead to war
- financists close to governemnet had influence on politics (e.g. Franco-Russian alliance dependant on French loans)
Counter Arguments of Economic Factors
- political factors took priority over economic ones (e.g. Germany was Britains best customer. and britain was Germanys 2nd best market- didnt stop them from getting into a war)
- states didnt want war due to economic reasons, since it would create debt, therefore economic reasons prevented war not encouraged it
Nationalism
- slav nationalism was seen as a threat to austrian influence in balkans, this created the balkan situation whihc ontributed to ww1
- german nationalism; weltpolitik policy + germans wanting their 'place in the sun'/expansionst view- proposed threats to great powers and contributed to international instability, daily telegraph interview with the kaiser in 1908 showed him to be very aggressive and have strong nationalist views- this also proposed threat to other european states. lastly, in 2nd morrocan crisis in 1908, germans took the 'panther' to agadir to look after nationalist there. this was seen to be another example of weltpolitik and since it have very few major interests there it created tensions with other states which were unnecessary.
counter argument of nationalism
- major peace movements during this time and many people voted for socialist not nationalists
The Balkan situation
- russia been humiliated twice now, firstly by japan in fact east in 1904/5 and secondly in bosnian crisis in 1908 when austria annexed bosnian. this meant that russia couldnt back down in the july crisis
- from the balkan wars in 1912/3 the power and prestige went up, this annoyed austria-hungary and meant that they'd find any way to repress this new found power
