Okinawa and Iwo Jima were islands occupied by Japan during WW2. It was the closest to the main islands of Japan. So after conquering those lands, America can directly attack the main islands of Japan. So that two battles were important in the pacific theater.

Camps that American Gov't set off for the Japanese American immigrants on the west coast during the time of Pearl Harbour attack. Only at that camps can Japanese American can live not somewhere else.
