Explain Feudalism

Definition- Social, Political, Military, and Economic system that prevailed in the middle ages in Europe


How it was used- Kings granted land to Barons, Barons granted land to Knights, Knights granted land to peasants, peasants provided food and service when demanded to the knights, Knights provided protection and military service to the Barons, Barons provided money and knights to the King.

What changes in Western Europe occurred with the demise of Roman control and the occupation of Germanic Peoples?

1. Less Urban- Germanic tribes were rual, they were farmers, they had no use for the urban cities of Roman Empire and abandon or changed the use of the cities, they did not know how to maintain the roads, so the roads disappeared over time, the cities that were built on island stayed and became trade centers.


2.More simplified Economy- Germanic tribes barter they did not create coin.


3. Lower Quality Goods- Rome created good quality goods the Germanic tribes were rual people so they created clay pots and that type of goods.


4. Reduced East/West Trade- Trade reduce between the East and West because the West did not have quality goods.


5. Limited Preservation Of Classical Knowledge- A lot of the tribes were illiterate so they did not preserve classical knowledge.


6. Wars and Invasions- Power and force of law from Rome was gone and all the tribes was fighting for land and power.

What were the effects of the Hundred year war?

1. Nationalism- In England and France they both had some feels of nationalism, they started identifying themselves under their country not by feudalism.


2. British Navy- Started to develop into a huge navy because they were just an island nation now.


3. War Technology- Knights were becoming obsolete, with archer become cheaper.


4. Naton/State- The state was gaining power over the nation.

What were the effects of the Black Death?

1. Drastic Decline in Population- it was about 50 percent of the population if you count the birth rate.


2. Economic- Peasants demanded more money to work, needed to develop new technology to make up for loss in man power.


3. Church- Lost some credibility, they were dying just like everyone else.


4. Feudalism- Depended on relationship between aristocracy and peasants with peasants demanding more money aristocracy changed to sheep.


Why did the renaissance begin in Northern Italy?

1. Weak Feudalism- City-states not kingdoms, commerce was off of trade not land


2. No Unified Monarchy- City-states had councils that made rules and laws, no kings. There were city leaders but no king they were run like a business.


3. Strong Cities- Wealthy off of trade and commerce, money equals power. Two things to do if rich, First keep money, that is why schools open up in Italy. Second is show it off, In Italy that meant art.

What were the four reasons that contributed to the rise of Western Europe during the 15th century?

1. Politically Fragmented- Created a need for innovation. In China no need for innovation because they were united as a country so everyone had everything.


2. Economic Competition- Created different ways of taxes, created more money for the government.


3. Other Powers Sidelined- All the other powers China, India, Japan, and the Muslim world all stop innovation and progression and froze themself in that time period.


4. The Enlightment- Started thinking for themselves, books spread due to the printing press. Ideas and innovation spread in days.

What were the motives for Eurpeans to venture out in to the oceans during the late 15th century?

1. Economic- tried to find a direct rout to Spice Island and China to avoid the Turks and Dutch, to buy stuff cheaper.


2. Curiosity- Age of Enlightment brought Europe to ask how everything works.


3. Religion- Portugal and Spain were Catholic and tried to convert the natives.


4. Political- Country from Atlantic coast wanted to shift trade from medditarian to Atlantic Ocean. (Spain, Portugal, France, England, and Holland)
