Ibn Battuta
Ibn Battuta was a great world traveler. He was a legal scholar. Islamic rulers governed the states he visited. He traveled to Mali, Africa and wrote about their customs. He traveled through the Sahara desert. He settled in India as a qadi (judge). Ibn Battuta traveled to many places. He worked hard to promote proper observance of Islam.
John of Montecorvino
John of Montecorvino was a very active Roman Catholic missionary in China. He became the first archbishop in Khanbaliq. He worked energetically to establish Roman Christianity in China. He translated the New Testament into Turkish, a language usually spoken by the Mongols. Montecorvino also built many churches in China. He took young males baptized them and taught them Roman Catholic rituals.
Hongwu
Hongwu established the Ming dynasty. Ming means “brilliant.” He came from a very poor family that he spent most of his youth as a beggar. Since he was an orphan, he entered a Buddhist monastery to ensure food, clothing, and a place to live. Because of his size, he was able to move up in the rankings in the military. He led a campaign, which toppled the Yuan dynasty.
Zheng He
the Ming government sponsored a series of expeditions. Leading them was Zheng He, a Muslim from southwestern china. He rose through the ranks and became a trusted advisor of Yongle, who was emperor at the time. He traveled to many places and sometimes received gifts from his hosts. He has giant ships.
Prince Henry the Navigator
Prince Henrique of Portugal embarked on a campaign to spread Christianity and increase Portugal influence on the seas. Portuguese forces seized a Moroccan city and it was a blow against Islam and a strategic move enabling them to move freely between the Mediterranean and Atlantic. He encouraged the Portuguese to venture into the Atlantic.
Vasco de Gama
he departed Portugal in the intention of sailing to India. He cruised up the east African coast and found someone who told him to take advantage of the monsoons. He arrived in Calicut and then returned to Lisbon with a large cargo of pepper and spices.
Fernando + Isabel
their marriage united the wealthiest and most important Iberian realms. They were commonly known as the “Catholic Kings.” Their Christian forces conquered the kingdom of Granada and absorbed it into their state. They wanted to make a place for Spain in the market places so they sponsored an expedition with Christopher Columbus.
Sufi
the Islamic religion spread through the help pf Sufi mystics. They traveled to recently conquered lands and tried to win their following of Islam. They did not emphasize on a strict following but the devotion to Allah. By taking a different approach, they were able to gather followers without resistance.
Little Ice Age
a climate change caused temperatures to decline. For more than 500 years, the earth experienced a “little ice age.” The cooler temperatures cause shorter growing seasons which caused agriculture to decline. That led to famine and starvation.
Black Death
the plague was infected on rodents, prairie dogs, squirrels, and fleas. The Mongols unwillingly helped spread the plague. They traveled throughout trade networks spreading it. It was called the Black Death because of the black or purple swelling people got. It typically killed up to 60 or 70 percent of its human victims. Population greatly declined.
Ming Dynasty
when the Yuan Dynasty fell the emperor Hongwu established the Ming Dynasty. Ming means “brilliant.” Hongwu wanted to erase all traces of Mongol rule and return to its Chinese past. Ming emperors ruled directly without the help of chief administers.
Reconquista
: The Reconquista was a crusade to drive Islamic forces out of Spain. They completed it by conquering Granada and absorbing it into their empire.
Renaissance
The Renaissance was a period of cultural flowering. The French word means “rebirth.” There was a lot of artistic and cultural creativity. A lot of culture and art emerged. Sculptors, architects, and painters drew inspiration form classical Greece.
Humanism
the term humanist means the interests scholars had in literature, history, and moral philosophy. Renaissance humanist were deeply committed to Christianity. They worked hard to make accurate translations of the New Testament and other important writings. They liked polished language of classical Greece.
