why study history?

It helps us to understand people and society, helps devolope usable habits of mind, gives us examples of how the world works, it is essential for individuals and societies as it perserves their stories and teaches meaningful lessons.

What is a civilization? What are the characteristics that mark civilizations?

Advanced cities, Specialized workers, Complex institutions, Record keeping, Advanced tecnology

List as many similarities as you can between the various early civilizations we have studied .

What does Mesopotamia mean? What "first civilization" lived there and what were its great accomplishments?

Mesopotamia means "land between 2 rivers" and it is in present day Iraq. Its first civilization was the Indus People and they built 2 planned cities which were Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, we can not translate their writings, their cities had plumbing and sewage systems and were bulit on a precise grid.

What have you learned about anchient forms of writing and who used them?

Writing was important to keep records of taxes, laws, calendars, and rituals, etc. Sumer used Cuneiform, Egypt used Hieroglyphics, Indus Valley has not been translated, China used written characters.

How long did Egyptian civilization last? What have they left behind?

it lasted about 3,000 years. They left behind the pyramids, Mathematics, Medicine, levers, etc.

Explain the Egyptian Belif about the afterlife and how they went about preparing for it/

Afterlife was a life thhat continued after death. The god Anubis would judge them to decide if they were good enough for eternal life so their soul could live forever in the Other World. They buried bodies in pyrimids or tombs with all their belongings that they might need in the afterlife like clothes, food, etc. They would mummifiy bodies by embalming and drying the corpse to perserve it and keep it from decaying.

What river was all-important to ancient Egypt and why did they worship it?

The Nile River and they worrshiped it because it because was so important in providing rich soil and bringing water for people and animals. Egypt would be completely desert without it.


What 2 major cities did the Indus Valley people build? What do we know about them? Why dont we know more?

they built Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, there cities were very well planned and had sewage and plumbing systems. We dont know more because we can not translate their writings.


Explain the devolopmen and fall of the Assyrian Empire.

Assyria had a large empire and conquered lan easily because they had advanced military oginization and state-of-the-art weapons. The Medes and Chaldeans came together and brought down the Assyrian capital of Nineveh and made Babylon the new capital. King Nebuchadnezzar took over and began to rebuild the city

Discuss the Persian Empire. What distinguished their philosophy of ruleing from other ancient near eastern kingdoms?

Great Ancient Near Eastern , Best methods of comunication, administration, and largest empire, religion was Zoroastrianism, Different type of Government such as being kinder, respecting religion and customs, allowed Jews to return to Jeruselem.

What is Polytheism? Which ANE people were not polytheistic? What was different about their religion?

Polytheism-belif of many gods, Persians were NOT polytheistic they were dualistic, they belived in equal good and bad forces.
