Middle Class

The early middle class was created when factory managers, merchants, and shippers became wealthy from the huge production from the industries. In the 1800s the new middle class split into two groups, the upper middle class and the lower middle class.

Utopian Socialism

Utopian socialism is the idea that the factory provides all necessary social services to its workers.

Victorianism

Victorianism is the idea that there is a place for everything, and everything is in its place

Unions

Workers unite to protest (working as a group is more productive to get what you want).

Bourgeoise

The middle class, typically with reference to its materialistic values.

Agricultural Revolution

a significant change in agriculture that occurs when there are discoveries,inventions, or new technologies that change production (more of a mechanical revolution).

Steam Ships

a ship that is propelled by a steam engine.

Factory Act of 1833

a Factory Act to improve conditions for children working in factories. Young children were working very long hours in workplaces where conditions were often terrible. The basic actwas as follows: no child workers under nine years of age.

Chartists

Chartism was a working-class movement for political reform in Britain which existed from 1838 to 1858.

Locomotives

a powered railway vehicle used for pulling trains.

Capitalists

a person who uses their wealth to invest in trade and industry for profit in accordance with the principles of capitalism.

Class-consciousness

awareness of one's place in a system of social class, especially (in Marxist terms) as it relates to the class struggle.

The water frame is the name given to a water-powered spinning frame developed by Richard Arkwright, who patented the technology in 1769

Marxism

No one should own land, religion is a political institution, workers should unite, 5 stages to achieve communism, cooperation is key. Foundation for communism.

Capitalism

an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
