Atom

The smallest unit of any living or nonliving thing

Neutron

Particles with no charge found in the nucleus of the atom

Macromolecule

A large molecule (ie- DNA, hemoglobin)

Mixture

A combination of two or more substances

Solution

A homogeneous mixture of a substance of smaller abundance (solute) dissolved into a substance of greater abundance (solvent)

Suspension

A mixture of two or more substances in a liquid that do not dissolve but distribute evenly throughout the liquid

Cell membrane

The external structure that houses the cell contents and regulates what travels into and out of the cell by way of many different proteins that act as gates, channels, or pumps; composed of a phospholipid bilayer

Nucleus

The largest of the organelles; contains the cell's genetic material, including DNA, chromosomes, genes, RNA

Rough ER

ER that has ribosomes bound to its surface; many proteins secreted by the cell are produced here

Smooth ER

ER that lacks ribosomes bound to its surface; many enzymes that synthesize important lipids and steroids are contained here

Cilia

Hairlike protrusions from the cell membrane used for moving substances around the cell

Flagellum

A tail like projection on the cell membrane used for cell motility, as on sperm cells

Hypertonic

A solution with a higher concentration of solute

Isotonic

A solution with the same concentration of solute

Hypotonic

A solution with a lower concentration of solute

Osmotic pressure

The pressure created from a solvent, such as water, diffusing across a semi-permeable membrane

Filtration

Movement of a fluid through a membrane with pores that restrict larger molecules from passing through but allow the passage of smaller molecules; based on mechanical pressure

Dialysis

Artificial filtering of waste and excess material out of the blood through a semi permeable membrane
