The National Union of Women's Suffrage Society were founded in 1897 by Millicent Fawcett who tried to get the vote by peaceful means, such as persuasion, meetings, and petitions to parliament.


100,000 members by 1914.

WSPU?

The Women's Social and Political Union was founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst along with her daughters Christabel and Sylvia. They took more direct measures and didn't mind getting arrested.


Less than 2,000 members by 1914.

1857 Matrimonial Clauses Act

Made it easier to get a divorce through ordinary courts if you could prove that the husband had committed adultery, cruelty or desertion.


Divorces were beforehand only applicable by parliamentary court.

1870 Married Woman's Property Act

Gave women the right to keep their earnings when they got married.

1886 Married Women Act

Decreed that a man that left his wife had to keep paying her living expenses

What were the arguments against the vote?

They should stay at home and not get involved.


They were irrational and couldn't make big decisions.


Only householders should have the right to get the vote and not many women owned a house, if they did they would be rich and would likely vote against the Liberals as they would be Conservative.

In countries such as New Zealand they had gained the vote, so why not here?

1913 Cat and Mouse Act

Allowed hunger strikers to be released then rearrested once they were fit again.

Why did the women get the vote?

They helped with jobs during the war, showing that they were just as capable as men.


We couldn't of won the war without them, so the country owed them.


The voting system was already being rearranged to accommodate soldiers that had been fighting as you could only vote if you had lived in the same address for over a year, so it was a good time to add women in.


The suffragettes had called off their campaign and no one wanted them to start it up again.


1918 Representation of the People Act (4)

Decreed that women over 30 who were either householders or married to a householder got the vote.


Decreed that all men over 21 could vote.


Allowed women to become MP's.


Equal voting rights was only achieved in 1928.

The Liberals put votes for women in their plural voting bill however the speaker disallowed it.


This resulted in them destroying paintings in the National Gallery.

March organised by NUWSS where 50,000 people marched on Hyde Park, coming form distant places like Land's End.

What was the role of women from 1914-1918?

1914 - Thought the war would be over by Christmas so they just knitted gloves and clothes for the troops.


May 1915 - Munitions Crisis, so David Lloyd George started recruiting women in munitions factories.


1916 - Conscription introduced so women took the men's jobs.


1917 - Women joined the armed forces.
