Name the trees found on the west side of a mountain in our area.
Redwoods, higher in elevation are firs, and then logepole pines.
Name the trees found on the east side of a mountain in our area.
Highest in elevation are spruces, then firs, lodgepole pines, douglas fir and ponderosa pines, and pinion junipers are at the bottom.
What is found in the basin of a mountainous area? In the valley?
Basin - sagebrush
Valley - Oak Savannah
What tree type is more dominant in the southwestern coastal states (OR, CA, and WA), red fir or lodgepole pine?
Red Fir
Pre 1990
What was the fire return interval of red fir? Why?
21-65 years, lots of ignition sources, west slope of Sierras and cascades, lightining strikes common as are massive thunderstorms
Pre 1990
What was the fire return interval of lodgepole pine? Why?
60-80 years, higher elevation, few thunderstorms
Pre 1990
Did the Red Fir have high ignition or low? large area burned or small? why? what type of pattern did it make? would this change with a warmer climate?
High ignition, small area burned because of cool moist climate, fine-grained mosiac with multiple aged stands in a small area. Could become coarse grained mosiac with an increase in temperature as projedeny creates ladder fuels.
Pre 1990
What types of fires occured in the LP area and what were their size? Name a trigger for a larger stand replacing fire? What pattern were the fires?
Duff fires (small, smouldering fires), with large areas burned. Bark beetle infestations create trigger, coarse grained mosiac with one aged stand over a large area.
Present Day
Are Red Firs shad tolerant or sun loving? What happens to them with fire suppression? Does it respond well to harvest? If so, what kind, specifically?
Shade tolerant tree, root diseases, mistletoe and stagnant stands occur with fire suppression. It repsonds well to harvest (unlike oak), but it must be UNEVEN.
Present Day
Is this tree shade tolorant or sun loving? What happens with fire suppression? Does it respond well to harvest? If so, what kind?
Shade intolorant, root diseases and mistletoe show up with fire suppression. Responds well to harvest if it is shelterwood or patch cuts (leave big trees to shelter area or clear a small patch of trees out).
