From what point of view is this story written?


The point of view from this story is from an older man who is remembering his childhood. It is first person narration. Then, it switches to a young boy, Billy's point of view.


Describe the scene in which the dogs are fighting?

The scene with the dogfight took place in an alley. All the dogs were fighting a redbone coonhound. The dog tried to hide in a bush, when a bold dog went in after him. He comes out with an injured ear. Another dog tried too, but ended up with a deep shoulder wound. The narrator swings his coat to make all the dogs scatter from the redbone.


What “terrible disease” did the narrator get when he was 10 years old?

When the narrator was 10 years old, he go what he thought was a "terrible disease". That disease was puppy love. Puppy love is when you really want a puppy and you feel like you really want to have a dog, and it "gets worse and worse, until it becomes unbearable."


What gift does Billy’s father buy for him? Describe the problem that is creates


The gift that Billy's father bought for him were three small steel traps. The first problem it creates is that is caught Samie, their house cat. His sister was crying because this had happened. Every time Billy tried to put down a trap, the cat would get into it.



Why was Billy losing weight and not sleeping at night?


When Billy was 10, he lost weight and couldn’t sleep at night. This was because his “...dog-wanting became so bad that began to lose weight and my food didn’t taste good anymore.” He couldn't sleep because he is listening to the coon's hunting.


What is so special about one item that a fisherman left behind and why?


When Billy went to the campground, he saw something special that the fisherman left behind. This was a sportsman’s magazine. On the back was a “For Sale” section, and there he found that he could buy two redbone coonhound pups for $50. He has always wanted 2 coonhounds, so that is why it is special.


Describe how Billy hoped to earn enough money to buy some pups.


Billy hoped to earn enough money to buy some pups by catching crawfish, picking blackberries, trapping minnows, making yellow corn bread, and picking fresh vegetables. He would then sell all those items to the fishermen who would go to the campsite. He would also sell the berries he picked to his grandfather for 10 cents a bucket.


What problems did Billy face after his dogs arrive in Tahlequah?


Billy faced many problems after his dog’s arrived in Tahlequah. For one, he had to go get his dogs. When he snuck out of the house to get his dogs, he had to walk all the way to Tahlequah. Once in the place, he had to locate the dogs and get past all the laughing people.


Describe some of the things that Billy saw for the first time as he traveled to Tahlequah?


Billy saw plenty of new things as he traveled to Tahlequah. He saw a school for the first time. It was full of girls and boys, and it had a playground. He had saw a playground for the first time, and went down the slide. He saw the sheriff, and the mirror. He saw a lot of two story houses, all of these for the first time.


What gifts did Billy buy for his family? Why did he buy them gifts?



Billy bought gifts for his family. He bought new overalls for his father, lots of fabric for his mother and sisters, and candy for his sisters. He bought them gifts because he thought that it was “...an opportunity to make amends for leaving home without telling anyone.”

Describe the differences between the two dogs.


There was a girl dog and a boy dog. The boy dog was bigger than the girl dog. He had a deeper red color no his chest was broad and solid. He had a lot of muscles and he was bold and aggressive. The girl dog as smaller and skinnier. She wasn't as daring, but she was smarter. She was smart and cautious.


Describe the fight Billy has with the gang of boys.


Billy had a fight with the gang boys. It started when the gang leader stepped on Billy's foot. Then, he grabbed the ear of the girl puppy. Then, the gang leader punched Billy, but Billy pushed back and made the leader have a bloody nose. Another boy came and started wrestling Billy, but billy bit his finger and he went away. There was too many boys, so they pushed him down. Then, sheriff came and ended the fight.


How are Billy and the dogs able to keep the mountain lion away?


Billy and the dogs were able to keep the mountain lion away. This was because mountain lions are afraid of fire, so he made a fire. The dogs would stand watch, and the boy dog would howl back to the mountain lion, and finally it went away.


Why do Billy’s pups give him courage?


Billy's pups gave him courage. This was because they were in position to defend and hunt. They had their backs straight, sitting side by side. They had their eyes looking into the darkness, and their noses were wiggling, trying to get a scent.


How do we know Billy is very poor?


We know that Billy is very poor by the way the author had described Billy. “I could see that I did look a little old. My straw colored hair was long and shaggy, and was bushed out like a corn tassle that was hit by wind. My overalls were patched and faded.”
