First Quatrain: Physical markers of passage of time to describe how ageing is unavoidable


Second quatrain: natura imagery shows beauty fades with age and death follows Third quatrain: Speaker questions why everything that is young and beautiful loses its beauty at the wastes of time.

Why is day described as brave while night is hideous

Day is a metaphor for life , while night is a metaphor for death. Brave is used to describe day as something positive and wonderful while hideous is used to describe night which is awful and threatening .

The apostrophe is used to shorten the words because if they were not it would interfere with iambic pentameter of the poem, where each line can only have ten syllables
