in the new testiment, the parable son tells the story of a young man who asks his father to give him his share of his inheritance early and then goes away and wastes all the money on fast living. he is prodigal because he wasted his fortune. prodigality is the failing that we all should try to avoid.
squander
the prodigal son squandered his fortune. he wasted it and threw it away on worthless things. mrs. banks gave little Herman $5 to go to the fair. he could have had a wonderful time, but he squandered all of his money on cotton candy and made himself sick. a squanderer might use his college loans to buy a new entertainment center instead of books for a semester.
spendthrift
spendthrift is a confusing word because it seems to have two contradictory parts. the meaning of the word is in the first part, "spend", not in the second part, "thrift." a spendthrift has no thrift. she spends everything. helen is such a spendthrift that she goes through her paycheck in three days and then has nothing left for the rest of the week.
profligate
someone who is profligate is not only wasteful, but wrecklessly so. Generally when you call somebody profligate, you mean that in addition to being a reckless spender, he is also immoral in a number of other ways. The sultan's profligate habits were notorious throughout Europe. No one could match him for immorality and profligacy.
