What is neuroscience?
The scientific study of the brain and of the links between brain activity and behavior
The Nervous System
Function – gather and process info, produce responses to stimuli, and coordinate workings of cells
Two main parts of nervous system
Central nervous system (CNS)
Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
Central Nervous System
CNS – brain and spinal cord
Receives, processes, interprets, and stores incoming sensory info
Sends messages to various parts of body
Spinal cord is bridge between the brain and lower part of the body
Spinal reflexes – automatic, do not require brain
Peripheral Nervous System
PNS – handles input and output
Contains all nerves except brain and spinal cord
Two Parts of Peripheral Nervous System
Somatic – (skeletal nervous system) voluntary action
Autonomic – (automatic) regulates blood vessels, glands, and internal organs
Sympathetic - excites
Parasympathetic - calms
