Longitude
Angular degrees based on the Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude) at Greenwich, London; degrees are east or west of Greenwich and meet in the Pacific Ocean at 180 degrees.
Latitude
Angular degrees based on the equator; the equator is 0 degrees latitude and the North Pole is 90 degrees North while the South Pole is 90 degrees south.
Continent
The major land masses of the earth.
Ocean
The largest bodies of water on the planet. There are five oceans that are all connected as one world ocean.
Sea
Either a very large lake that contains salt water or a portion of an ocean (can be surrounded by water or surrounded by land).
River
A river is a large stream that flows over land. It is often a perennial (year-round) water body and usually flows in a specific channel, with a considerable volume of water.
Bay
Any wide indentation of the land. Larger than a cove but smaller than a gulf.

a long connected chain of mountains and hills
Plateau
A plateau is a large, flat area of land that is higher than the surrounding land
Valley
a long, narrow hollow in the Earth's surface lying between two higher areas

a land mass (smaller than a continent) that is surrounded by water
Absolute Location
A point on the earth's surface expressed by a coordinate system such as latitude and longitude.
Relative Location
A location of a place in relation to another place
Population
the number of inhabitants (either the total number or the number of a particular race or class) in a given place

A graphic representation of the earth's surface.
Legend
a small table accompanying the map that explains the symbols that are used on the map.

the process whereby the settlement frontier is eliminated through the creation of trade areas and the establishment of ties with the core areas and the surrounding communities
