Dawes Act
Passed by Congress in 1887 to encourage Native Americans to become farmers. Divided up their land & gave it to individual families.
Homestead Act
Free land for people to farm. Half a million Americans had set up farms; many people didn’t have the $ to move west & start a farm.
Massacre at Wounded Knee
About 300 Native Americans were killed by US troops while trying to surrender, when a shot accidentally rang out.

Ghost Dance
a Native American dance thought to make a new world free of white men and filled with plenty.
Sitting Bull
Lakota war chief and holy man. Leader in the Souix War of 1876. Killed by police officers when they were trying to arrest him for spreading the ghost dance.
