The Great Schism
Also called the East-west Schism. In 1054 AD it divided into two branches, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. Relations b/w the Christian Church reached terminal crisis. In 1054, it split along doctrinal, theological, linguistical, and geographical lines
The Francis of Assisi
Born 1181/1182 in Italy, was a Friar and founder of the Order of the Friar Minor. He is known as the patron saint of animals, the environment, and Italy. It is customary for the Catholic church to have ceremonies to honor animals around his feast day of October 4th. He died October 3, 1226.
Martin Luther
Born November 10, 1483 and died February 18, 1546. He changed the course of Western Civilization by initiating the Protestant Reformation. As a priest and theology professor he confronted indulgent salesmen with his 95 thesis in 1517. He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment of sin could be purchased with money. He taught that salvation was a free gift from God.
Joan of Arc
She was considered a national heroine of France and a Catholic saint. She was a peasant girl born in 1412 in eastern France. She led the French army to many important victories in the Hundred Years' War. She was captured by the Burgundians, sold to the English, and burned on a stake at the age of nineteen on May 30, 1431. She was later declared a martyr by Pope Callixtus III.
Saint Thomas Aquinas
Born 1225 and died March 7, 1274. He was a priest of the Roman Catholic Church in the Dominican Order from Italy. He was an influential philosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism, known as Doctor Cummunis. He is held in the Catholic church as the model teacher for those studying priesthood and considered by many catholics to be the church's greatest philosopher and theologian
Magna Carta of 1215
The Great Charter of Freedoms is an English legal charter, originally issued in 1215. Written in Latin; was the first document forced onto the English King by his subjects in an attempt to limit his power by law and protect their privileges. It was read at the opening of almost every Parliament the King called.
Machiavelli's The Prince
A book written in 1513 by Florentine Niccoló Machiavelli (1469-1527), was not published until 1532. It offered an indictment of the humanist ideal of princely rule and made some fundamental contributions to political theory. Machiavelli said in order to prevent France from over-taking Italy, the Italians most unite behind a leader, a Prince.
