The figures in the Constantinian reliefs are squat in proportion and reminicent of the four tetrachs. They do not move according to any classical principle of naturalistic movement, but rather with the mechanical and repeated stances and gestures of puppets. The relief is very shallow, the forms are no longer fully modeled, and the details are incised. One need only compare this Constantinian relief with a Byzantine icon of the sixth century AD to see that the new compositional principles are those of the middle ages.
