What is a well pit?

A square or round construction around a well casing. The top is level with the ground surface, and the bottom extends below the frost line (~6 feet). The well casing ends near the bottom of the well pit so that it does not rise up to the frost zone.

This protects production lines from freezing.

What are the issues with well pits?

These cavernous depressions can be flooded with waters rising above the well head.

This water can transport pathogens, chemicals and other unwanted material into the well.

Animals can also fall into the well pit and contaminate the well.

Are there any direct human dangers with a well pit?

Yes.

- You can fall into a pit.

- Entering without breathing equipment can be fatal due to build up of CO.

- CH4 buildup can be fatal/cause an explosion.

Who can upgrade a well pit?

- Qualified well driller

- Professional hydrogeologist

- Geotechnical Engineer

How is a well pit upgraded?

- Hire a qualified professional

- Remove all lines and pump

- Remove Pit liner

- Extend casing at least 12" above ground

- Install a pitless adapter below the frost line

- Reinstall pump and lines

- Fill excavation hole and put in surface seal

- Grade surface and install well cap

- disinfect well and plumbing system

What's a pitless adapter?

A water-tight connection between a water line and the well. This is connected to the well casing at a depth below the frost line to prevent freezing.

Should be corrosion-resistant material.
