major STI's

chlamydia, conorrhea, syphilis, (ALL BACTERIAL). HPV, genital herpes, HIV/AIDS and HBV (ALL VIRAL).

may lead to chronic pain, infertility, stillbirths, genital cancers and death.

chlamydia

most common bacterial STI in canada. leads to PID in women. most common in nunavut, Northwest places and Yukon. can be asymptomatic and leads to epididymitis in men. infants can get infection from mothers. cured by one does of antibodies.

HPV

most common viral STI in canada that causes cancer but has vaccine. leads to warts, genital warts and genital cancers. causes different types of cancer. Harald zur H got noble prize in 08 for discovering the role or HPV in cervical cancer.

HPV genome has 2 genes E6 and E7 that give cell chance to become cancerous.

-E6: destroys P53

-E7: inhibits protein that stops cell cycle

PID

in 10-40% of women who have been infected with chlamydia or gonorrhea and have not gotten enough treatment. infections travels to uterus oviducts ovaries and pelvic cavity. can leads to future infections such as infertility and young women below 25 are more likely to get it if they smoke, use IUDS and have several partners.

HIV/AIDS

is a chronic disease that damages bodys immune system progressively

-attacks helper T cells and other essentials of the immune system.

-HIV enters human cell and changes its own RNA into DNA and this DNA is inserted into host cell.

-viral DNA takes over cell and makes more HIV copies thus immune functions are stopped.

1% world has it. began in canada in 1985 and 1st death was in 1938. 30% of infected ppl dont know they have it.

ppl with HIV are vulnerbale to secondary infections.

stages of HIV/AIDS

-primary/acute infection phase: in 1st few weeks after being infected gives flu symptoms and makes individual more infectious and tests are -ve at this stage.

-chronic asymotimatic stage: lasts 2-20 yrs and this is when immune cells are destroyed as CD4 cells decrease and immune system is damaged a lot.

HIV treatment

no cure but life can be extended using antiviral drugs that block HIV replication and therapies with variety of drugs

treatment of other infections is good using antibiotics

life cycle of HIV and how antiviral drugs work

- HIV binds to receptors on CD4 releasing its RNA into cell.

-RT enzyme converts viral RNA into DNA

-intergase splices viral DNA

-viral DNA uses cells stuff to make viral RNA proteins

-HIV protease cuts viral proteins into small segments to assemble new copies of the virus

-new copies of cell are assembled and spread in body
