What is Epogen?
Synthetic erythropoeitin
What is Epogen's function?
Stimulates bone marrow to make more RBCs.
When is Epogen used?
To treat anemia in chronic kidney disease, chemo., or to reduce the chance of needing RBC transfusion.
What is Tumil-K?
Potassium Gluconate
What is Tumil-K used for?
To treat or prevent hypokalemia
Why is potassium important?
It is the principal intracellular cation in the body. It is essential in maintaining cellular tonicity, nerve impulse transmission, smooth, skeletal, & cardiac muscle contraction, and maintenance of normal renal function
How does acidosis affect potassium in body? How does alkalosis affect potassium in body?
Acidosis can shift potassium out of the intracellular space & alkalosis shifts potassium into the intracellular space
What is the major problem associated with potassium supplementation?
Hyperkalemia
What are some signs of hyperkalemia?
Muscular weakness and/or GI disturbances and cardiac conduction disturbances
What drug class is amlodipine in?
Calcium channel blocker
What is amlodipine's MOA?
Inhibits calcium influx across cell membranes in both cardiac & vascular smooth muscle. Acts as peripheral arteriolar vasodilator and reduces afterload. Depresses impulse formation & conduction velocity in cardiac muscle.
What is amlodipine used for?
To treat hypertension in cats, decrease BP in dogs w/chronic renal disease, and to activate the RAAS system
What do ACE inhibitors do?
Prevent formation of angiotensin II by competing with angiotensin-I for the enzyme ACE, which decreases aldosterone secretion (vasodilates)
What are ACE inhibitors used to treat?
Used to treat feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and to reduce proteinuria
What is the MOA for beta adrenergic antagonist?
Binds to beta adrenoreceptors and block binding of norepinephrine and epinephrine to these receptors. Inhibits normal sympathetic effects that act thru these receptors.
What are beta adrenergic antagonists used to treat?
Hypertension
Which serovars in Leptospirosis is most commonly incriminated in canine infection?
L. canicola, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, L. gryppotyphosa, L. pomona, L. bratislava
Which serovar of Leptosipirosis uses dog as reservoir?
L. canicola
