FTP

File Transfer Protocol. Ability to rapidly transfer all file types from one computer to another, intact for viewing or other purposes. Can be done via a browser or an application.

Host

Computer that provides documents to a user or client.

IP Adress

A unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by dots.




Ex/ 122.123.2.4

Link

A URL embedded in another document, so that you click on the highlighted text or button referring to the link, you retrieve the outside URL.

Server

A computer running software, assigned an IP address, and connected to the internet so that it can provide documents to the internet. Also called a "host computer".

Spiders

Computer robot programs, referred to sometimes as crawlers or knowledge bots that are used by search engines to roam the World Wide Web via the Internet, visit sites and databases, and keep the search engine database of webpages up to date. They obtain new pages, update known pages, and delete obsolete ones. Their findings are then integrated into the "home" database.




Most large search engines operate several at all times. Even so, the web is so enormous that it can take six months for them to cover it. resulting in a certain degree of "out-of-datedness" (link rot) in all search engines.

W3C (World Wide Web Consortium)

The main international standards organization for the World Wide Web.

Web Standards

Guidelines or recommendations on how a webpage should be marked up in HMTL and CSS and how browsers should display that markup.

Client Computer

Receives information from the host computers.

DNS

Domain Name Server. Transfers host names into IP Address'.
