Weathering
The process that breaks down rock and other substances at earth's surface.
Mechanical/Phsical weathering
is a type of weathering in weathering in which rock is physically brken into smaller pieces.
Chemcial (Decomposition)
is the process that breaks down rock throungh chemical changes.
Mechanical weathering
breaks rock into pieces by freezing and thawing, release of pressure, growth of plants, actions of animals, and abrasion.
Abration
is the grinding away of rock by rock particles carried by water, ice, wind,or gravity.
Ice wedging
A common kind of mechanical weathering.
Chemical Weathering
is the process that breaks down rock through chemical changes.
Water
is the most important agent of chemical weathering.
Gases
can cause chemical weathering,too!
Oxygen
gas in the air can combine with metal to form rust in a process called Oxidation.
Carbon dioxide
can combine with water to form an acid that weathers.
Living organisms
can cause chemical weathering.
Rate of Weathering
The most important factors that determine that rate at which weathering occurs are type of rock and climate.
Soil Formation
As rock is broken down by weathering and mixes with other materials, it forms soil.
Soil
is the loose, weathered material on earth's surface in which plants can grow.
Bed rock
is the solid layer of rock underneath the soil. when exposed at the surface, bedrock weathers into particles that form that basic material for soil.
Erosion
is the process in which natural forces move weathered rock and soil from on place to another.
Sediment
the material moved by erosion .
Depasition
occurs when the forces of erosion lay down sediment.
Erosion occurs by
gravity,ranning, water, waves, and wind.
Gravity
is the force that moves rock and other materials downhill.
