Chemical Weathering
when you mix substances with minerals and it becomes a new substance

When substances physically change the shape of minerals
Frost action
When water goes into spaces and holes and expands, splitting the rock.

when rocks rub against each other and some of the rock comes off

when layers of rock are pulled off

when little roots go in cracks in rocks, then get bigger and split the rock.
Erosion
The process of moving sediment from one place to another
Gravity
The most important force in erosion. It causes sediment to move.
Wind
sorts sediments and rounds them out with flying sand
Water
The most important agent in erosion. Water polishes sediments into round balls. Then it sorts the rocks by size and deposits them.
Velocity of stream flow
Influenced by slope and volume of stream. Rocks transported are bigger. More velocity=more erosion
Volume of stream flow
Depends on rainfall. Volume determines where erosion will occur.
Glaciers
Glaciers form sharp sediments. Sediments unsorted. Sediments have scratches from the ground.
Deposition
The process of dropping material out of transportation
Horizontal Sorting
Water starts slow and gets faster
As water slows, smaller and smaller particles deposit. Biggest sediments on the edge of the water, smaller in the middle.
Vertical Sorting
Water starts fast and slows down.
Larger rocks fall first, then smaller on top.
Weathering Influence
When weathering influences rocks
Surface Area
The amount of area on the outside. Weathering only happens on the outside, so the more surface area, the more weathering there is.
Mineral Origin
The place where minerals come from
Climate
Cool climates support more physical weathering, warm climate supports more chemical weathering.
