Weathering

Process of breaking down rock. Can be physical or chemical.

Mechanical Weathering

Breaking down rock through physical force (ice, wind, water, gravity)

Chemical Weathering

Change caused by chemical reaction (ex. Water, acids, air)

Abrasion

Mechanical weathering that occurs when two different rocks or materials grind or scrape against each other.

Ice Wedging

When the water freezes ice expands breaking rocks apart.

Examples of Mechanical Weathering

Plants, abrasion, wedging, water, animals, gravity

Examples of Chemical Weathering

Air/oxidation, acid in precipitation (rain and snow), acids in ground water, acid in living things.
