Atmosphere

the mixture of gases that surrounds a planet; Earth’s atmosphere is mostly a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen

air pressure

the density or the weight of air pressing down

weather

the condition of the air or atmosphere at a particular time and place; determined by four main ingredients: temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction; and air pressure

climate

how the atmosphere behaves over a long period of time at a certain location

meteorologist

a weather forecaster; an expert with specialized education who observes, explains, and forecasts weather phenomena and patterns

humidity

the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere

hydrosphere

the total amount of water on a planet including liquid, vapor, and ice

THERMOMETER

A THERMOMETER measures the air temperature. Most thermometers are closed glass tubes containing liquids such as alcohol or mercury. When air around the tube heats the liquid, the liquid expands and moves up the tube. A scale then shows what the actual temperature is.

BAROMETER

A BAROMETER measures air pressure. It tells you whether or not the pressure is rising or falling. A rising barometer means sunny and dry conditions, while a falling barometer means stormy and wet conditions. An Italian scientist named Torricelli built the first barometer in 1643.

ANEMOMETER

An ANEMOMETER measures wind speed. The cups catch the wind, turning a dial attached to the instrument. The dial shows the wind speed.
