How much of an area must be affected for a non convective SIGMET to be issued? |
3,000 square miles |
What criteria is a non convective SIGMET issued for? |
Severe Turbulence (SEV TURB) Severe Icing (SEV ICE) Widespread Duststorm (WDSPR DS) Widespread Sandstorm (WDSPR SS) Volcanic Ash (VA) |
How long are non convective SIGMETs valid for? |
up to but not exceeding 4 hours |
What are the criteria for a convective SIGMET to be issued? |
• A line of thunderstorms at least 60 miles long with thunderstorms affecting at lat 40 percent of its length • An area of active thunderstorms affecting at least 3,000 square miles covering at least 40 percent of the area concerned and exhibiting a very strong radar reflectivity intensity or a significant satellite or lightning signature • Embedded or severe thunderstorm(s) expected to occur for more than 30 minutes during the valid period regardless of the size of the area |
What are the criteria for a special convective SIGMET to be issued? |
• Tornado, hail greater than or equal to 3/4 inch, or wind gusts greater than or equal to 50 knots are reported • Indications of rapidly changing conditions if, in the forecaster's judgement, they are not sufficiently described in existing convective SIGMETs • Special issuance is not required for a valid convective SIGMET |
How long are convective SIGMETs valid for? |
2 hours, or until superseded by the next hourly issuance |
What are the criteria for an AIRMET to be issued? |
• IMC • Widespread Mountain Obscuration • Moderate Turbulence • Sustained surface winds greater than 30 kts • Moderate Icing • Non-Convective LLWS potential |
How often are AIRMETs issued? |
4x daily |
How long are AIRMETs valid for? |
6 hours |
What are the types of AIRMETs? |
Sierra - IMC and/or extensive mountain obscuration Tango - turbulence, sustained sfc winds > 30 kts, non-convective LLWS Zulu - Icing |
