What is a TRS? |
An intense low pressure weather system with winds exceeding 74mph, usually about 200-700km in diameter and help move heat from equatorial regions to higher latitudes |
Where do TRS's occur? |
Between 5 and 20* N/S of the equator as this is the minimum latitude where the Coriolis effect is present |
When do TRS's usually occur? |
In Autumn as sea temperatures rise to correct level of 26*c over summer. |
How frequent are they? |
There are around 50 TRS worlwide every year |
Where do they go? |
They track westward as they follow the trade winds and then track polewards as they are deflected by the Coriolis effect |
What are the conditions needed for a TRS? |
Over an ocean with sea temps of over 26*c Heat to depth of over 60m Location between 5* and 20* Low level convergence of air Rapid outflow of air |
What is the lifecycle of a TRS? |
Tropical disturbance Tropical depression Tropical storm Tropical Revolving Strom |
What is a Tropical Disturbance? |
Disorganised area of thunder storms in the tropics existing for over 24hours |
What is a Tropical Depressions? |
Circulating mass of defined clouds & thunder storms with sustained wind speeds of up to 61km/h |
What is a Tropical Storm? |
Circulating system of strong thunderstorms with sustained wind speeds of 62-140 km/h |
What is a TRS? |
Spinning mass of towering clouds producing torrential rain and strong winds of over 140km/h |
What is the difference between N.Hemisphere TRS and S.Hemisphere TRS? |
N.Hemisphere TRS have an anticlockwise rotation and track North with the stronger winds being on the right side. S.Hemisphere TRS are the opposite |
What are the characteristics of a TRS? |
Eye Spiral Rain Bands |
What is the Eye? |
Located at the hurricanes centre and can measure 20-30 miles and are a cloud free area of sinking air & light winds which don't exceed 15mph. High temp of 32*c and low pressure |
What is the Eye Wall? |
Surrounds the eye and winds may gust more than 200mph. Can be as high as 14km and produce heavy rain and strong winds |
What is the Spiral rain bands? |
Curved bands of clouds that trail away from the eye wall in a spiral fashion. Can produce heavy bursts of rain and wind but decrease with distance from storm |
What is the Saffir-Simpson Scale? |
1-5 rating based on the TRS's present intensity. Its used to give an estimate of potential damage and flooding expected along the coast from a TRS landfall |
Why is a TRS hazardous? |
Winds, Heavy rain and Storm surges |
What are the methods of protection? |
Evacuation Government preparedness Community protection Sea wall, break waters and flood barriers Retrofied buildings Insurance |
What are the human factors which could increase vulnerability to TRS? |
Population density Level of development Building quality Prediction Education |
What are the methods of prediction? |
Measurement of sea temperatures Measurement of wind and air pressure (Hurricane hunters and dropsonde) Satellite tracking Historic tracks |
What are the methods of Prevention? |
Cloud seeding- drop silver iodide into clouds from planes to force the TRS to release water. However never used as could alter the global circulation of air |
